Lessons for children and adults of all ages, abilities and experience levels, from complete beginners to more advanced painters.
I’ll help you improve your observational and technical skills, while also encouraging you to experiment with different ways of approaching painting and drawing.
My lessons are mainly taught using acrylic paints, but if you’re interested in learning to paint with oils, I can teach you that too. 🙂
Classes take place on Saturdays at 9am or 10:45am, with each lesson lasting 1 hour and 15 minutes.
One-to-one lessons and small group tuition take place in my studio at Mivart Studios in Easton, Bristol.
If you’d prefer private tuition at your own home, I can also accommodate this.
Acrylic paints and painting tools are provided. You just need to bring your own canvas or acrylic paper.
Why learn with Pili?
To start by confusing you, my full name is Pilar Cortes, but Pili is the short name for Pilar. Pilar feels a little too formal.
What you get with my lessons is a friendly and approachable teacher in her own painting studio, where you can feel at ease while painting and learning. I’ll help you develop your skills and give you the knowledge and guidance you need to become a more confident painter.
I have been painting for most of my life. I was very fortunate to gain my Visual Arts degree from the Faculty of Arts and Design at UNAM, one of the leading art schools in Mexico and the first art school in the Americas.
I was lucky to be rigorously taught by renowned contemporary Mexican artists and art academics, and to develop a strong foundation in drawing, painting, observation and artistic practice.
I now bring that experience into my teaching, adapting my lessons to different ages, abilities and levels of experience.
Whether you’re a complete beginner or already have some experience, everyone is welcome.
Booking & payment
Lessons are booked in blocks of weekly sessions during term time.
If you have commitments during some weeks, no worries, you can book only the sessions that work for you.
If you’d still like to have lessons during the holidays, I’m happy to accommodate these where possible.
To book, please email me at least one week before the start of the following month. I’ll confirm your sessions and send you an invoice for payment by bank transfer.
If you can’t attend a lesson
If you let me know at least one day before your lesson, I can keep your booking valid for you to use another time.
For last-minute, same-day cancellations, the lesson will be charged.

Stopping classes
If you need to stop lessons, I’d appreciate one month’s notice. This is because I need to plan classes and studio space in advance.
If the number of students in a group reduces significantly, I may need to stop that particular class. I’ll always give you as much notice as possible.
Parents & carers
Parents and carers are not permitted to stay and watch children’s classes, as their presence can be distracting for the children.
This also gives the children their own space to concentrate, experiment and enjoy the lesson independently.
Photography & social media
During classes, I will sometimes take photographs or short videos of pupils from behind, and/or photographs of their artwork, for promotional purposes and social media.
I will not photograph or film children’s faces.
